This event is open to the public, but you should RSVP by emailing Martin Michalek. This masterclass will take participants to three major collecting institutions in Washington, D.C., where we will meet with curators and staff. Each institution has kindly agreed to show us some of their finest exempla of Renaissance and Early Modern prints and drawings, all of which attempt to recover some aspect of classical antiquity either through illustration, print, translation, or other.
7:30 a.m. - 7:45 - Get to Penn Station (Baltimore) early.
7:53 a.m. – Depart on Train 419 toward Union Station. The trains leave promptly.
8:56 a.m. – Arrive at Union Station. Walk to Library of Congress, Lessing Rosenwald Room.
9 - 10:30 a.m. – Library of Congress (10 First Street SE, Washington DC). Meet Dr Stephanie Stillo, Chief of the Rare Books and Special Collections Division, as well as Marianna Stel, Librarian of Rare Books and Special Collections for a tour of the collections and library space.
10:30 - 10:45 a.m. – Walk to Folger Shakespeare Library (201 E Capitol St SE, Washington, DC).
10:45 - Noon – Folger Shakespeare Library. Meet Assistant Curator of Collections, Johnna Champion, for a tour of early modern Greek and Latin educational texts, as well as their influence on Christian humanist Reformation tracts.
12:00 - 2 p.m. – Walk to The Hawk ‘N’ Dove Pub (329 Pennsylvania Avenue S) for lunch.
2 - 2:30 p.m. – Uber to National Gallery of Art, East Building (4th Street and Pennsylvania Ave NW). Make sure you Uber with a Stern fellow, as they will pay for the ride to the National Gallery of Art.
2:30 - 3:45 p.m. – National Gallery of Art, East Building. Meet with Dr Rena Hoisington, Curator of Old Master Prints and Drawings. Obtain green visitor’s badges. You must show valid government-issued ID to access the building (passports, driver’s licenses, etc.).
4 - 4:30 p.m. – Uber to private collection.
4:30 - 7:15 – Mark McConnell, Associate Research Fellow of the Stern Center. Tour of early modern Greek imprints and rare books produced by the Plantin-Moretus press. This session will be followed by a drinks and hors d’oeuvres reception.
7:15 onward – Return to Baltimore. Here is the Marc train schedule, for your information.
